Remy Bonjasky Victorious in His Retirement Fight Against Cro Cop

Remy Bonjasky Victorious in His Retirement Fight Against Cro Cop

Tonight in Zagreb, Croatia fans across the world got to say goodbye to the legendary Remy Bonjasky at GLORY 14 Zagreb. It was a tall task for Bonjasky, who was stepping into the ring with local hero Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic with a rather biased crowd. It didn’t matter, though, as Remy Bonjasky has steppe into the ring with the odds against him in the past before. This was a chance for redemption for Remy Bonjasky, a rematch from twelve years ago that saw Mirko Cro Cop walk away victorious.

It was three tense, close rounds fought by both men. Both Mirko Cro Cop and Remy Bonjasky’s styles have changed as they’ve aged and accumulated injuries, with Cro Cop relying on a more punch-heavy style and Bonjasky more on defense with the hands and offense with the legs. This was the story of the fight, as Mirko would swarm with the punches while Bonjasky would defend, then circle away to get distance and lay into Mirko with body kicks.

Remy Bonjasky Victorious in His Retirement Fight Against Cro Cop

Many fans are going to be unhappy about the decision in this fight, though. Cro Cop was a bit more aggressive throughout, but the shots weren’t doing a lot of damage and Bonjasky was never in much trouble. Bonjasky was fighting as he tends to do, but his kicks were landing and landing heavy. This made for an incredibly close bout that fans of both fighters will be disputing for years to come, that being said, Remy Bonjasky’s hand was raised at the end of the night.

Remy Bonjasky has had a tremendous career and it is sad to see him go, but the persisting vision problems as well as years of injuries have made it tough for him to compete against the younger, quicker fighters of today. What we can say is that both men are legends and that nothing, no win or loss, can take that away at this point. I’m genuinely saddened that we won’t have another chance to hear “The Man with the Harmonica” again to lead Remy Bonjasky into the ring, but I was happy to see him walk away from the sport with a victory.

Miguel Torres Added to GLORY 17 Tournament, Cro Cop vs. Kharitonov

Miguel Torres Added to GLORY 17 Tournament, Cro Cop vs. Kharitonov

GLORY 17 Los Angeles keeps getting more and more interesting as June 21st rapidly approaches. The original headliner was planned to be Mirko Cro Cop Filipovic vs. Pat Barry in a rematch from their UFC bout a few years ago, but either Pat Barry won’t be cleared to compete in time or has refused to compete (it’s not clear). That means that Mirko Cro Cop has a new opponent, with that opponent being none other than PRIDE and K-1 veteran Sergei Kharitonov. Both men are at an interesting point in their respective careers, with Cro Cop dropping a decision to Remy Bonjasky at GLORY 14 and Kharitonov being out-pointed by Anderson “Braddock” Silva at GLORY 16.

Miguel Torres Added to GLORY 17 Tournament, Cro Cop vs. Kharitonov

That’s not all, though. GLORY was one man shy for the GLORY 17 Featherweight tournament and now it looks like former WEC Bantamweight Champion and former UFC competitor Miguel Torres will be joining the GLORY roster, getting an immediate spot in the Featherweight tournament. Miguel Torres is an interesting choice, as he was a popular name in the WEC and UFC for a while, but it’s hard not to deny that he has looked less-than-impressive of late. It will be interesting to see how he does in Kickboxing.

Rules:

The LiverKick.com rankings are living rankings that have existed in one form or another since 2009. After the initial rankings were tabulated, they moved on from there. If one fighter beats a fighter ranked above them, they take their place. If a new fighter is introduced, that means that said fighter is ranked above whomever he beat, moving everyone else down.

Fighters can drop or move up in the rankings without losing or winning, depending on the division in general. After 12 months of inactivity, or if a retirement is announced, fighters can be removed from the rankings. These rankings are also at our discretion.

Badr Hari Wins Big in Dubai, Aerts and Cooper Draw

Badr Hari Wins Big in Dubai, Aerts and Cooper Draw

Today in Dubai Badr Hari competed in the Global FC 3 Heavyweight Kickboxing tournament in a field that saw Hari, Leko, Oborotov and Graham, making for an interesting blend of old talent and new talent. The big news is that Badr Hari walked away from Global FC 3 with a new belt and some more money in his pocket after he was able to knock out both opponents in short order. First up was Stefan Leko, a guy who used to be one of the world’s elite and is now competing beyond his means, to the extent where I almost refuse to watch him fight anymore.

Badr Hari Wins Big in Dubai, Aerts and Cooper Draw

Leko almost had nothing to offer Hari, almost being put down immediately in the first round. He fought back to his feet, though, only to be dropped again and for the referee to stop the bout. Badr Hari’s second fight of the evening saw him meeting an old foe in Peter Graham. The two had traded wins over seven years ago, but time was not kind to Peter Graham who found himself knocked down twice in round one as well and Badr Hari having a relatively easy night.

On the other side of the spectrum, Peter Aerts tore his hamstring against Dewey Cooper and both men had a clinch-heavy fight that saw the judges render it a draw. Tough break for Peter Aerts, but it might be time for him to consider spending time with his family, his gym and wrestling more in Japan.

Mirko Cro Cop wants to fight Gokhan Saki in 2013

Mirko Cro Cop wants to fight Gokhan Saki in 2013

Mirko Cro Cop’s career in combat sports keeps trucking on, with an MMA fight against Shinichi Suzukawa at Inoki Bom-Ba-Ye 2012 on December 31 in Japan. Cro Cop will also fight kickboxing on March 15 in Zagreb, Croatia at another Final Fight event, like the one that took place in March this year. He took to his Facebook page once again where he gave some details about what’s happening with his schedule and career.

While Cro Cop says he doesn’t have an opponent yet, he stated that he wants to fight Gokhan Saki, saying that Saki is the best kickboxer today. He referenced Andy Hug fighting in Switzerland in the 1990s, fighting top quality fighters and drawing big crowds, something that he would like to do:

Mirko Cro Cop wants to fight Gokhan Saki in 2013

“The legendary Andy Hug had an annual event in his native Switzerland and brought only top quality fighters as opponents. Before the home crowd he fought against Bernardo, Aerts, Leko, my small world… So it works. It is my desire for Gokhan Saki to be an opponent because he is the best kickboxer today, but not sure that he will be available in March. I believe that by the end of this year, however, it will be achieved and it will be an excellent match.”

Mirko Cro Cop has a potentially busy schedule for the first half of 2013, with the March 15 fight in Croatia, a May MMA fight against Pedro Rizzo at Royal FC in Brazil, and potentially even an MMA fight against Denis Stojnic in Bosnia on February 15, though negotiations are still ongoing. Of course, there’s also the K-1 World Grand Prix Final which Cro Cop qualified for, but the last statement from Cro Cop and his manager on that matter was that they don’t know what’s happening with it or when it will be.
