The summer is just starting to heat up and GLORY will look to keep their “Summer of GLORY” campaign rolling with a bang during the dog days in Denver on August 10th. The event, already announced, will now feature a GLORY Light Heavyweight Championship bout between long-reigning champion Artem Vakhitov and former It’s Showtime Light Heavyweight Champion Danyo Ilunga.
Ilunga has had his ups and downs in his career, even recently considering retirement, yet he’s stuck with it and is on a two-fight win streak heading into his August clash with Vakhitov. The two last met at GLORY 25 in Milan way back in 2015 in a bout that saw Vakhitov pick up a decisive victory. That fight served as the beginning of Vakhitov’s quest for the GLORY Light Heavyweight Championship and also began his current six-fight win streak. With three impressive title defenses thus far, Vakhitov is looking unstoppable, with there even being murmurs and fan demands of him moving up to heavyweight for a superfight with another unstoppable champion in Rico Verhoeven.
It’ll be a big hurdle for Ilunga, but for a man who has revived his career and seems to look a hell of a lot closer to the elusive, technical Ilunga that hardcore fans knew and loved from 2011 or so, it seems like Ilunga’s limitations are melting away as long as he doesn’t get sucked into a brawl. Against Vakhitov there’s a good chance that he’ll be able to avoid a brawl and fans will be in for a smart, technical bout in Denver. It remains to be seen how this fight is viewed, with betting sites still not ready to release the lines yet, but one has to imagine Vakhitov a heavy favorite.
More will be announced for the event in the coming weeks.
