GLORY 5 London: Bonjasky vs. Spong Event Pushed Back Until March

GLORY 5 London: Bonjasky vs. Spong Event Pushed Back Until March

Maybe it’s because I just recently (within the past two weeks) finished George R.R. Martin’s fifth installment of the Song of Ice and Fire books, A Dance With Dragons, but the repetitive phrase from that book, “Words are Wind” has been striking me as a truth in the world of Kickboxing. Or basically; it is known. Glory’s first big event of 2013 has already seen its first snag as the event, announced just mere days ago as taking place on February 16th has now today been announced to be pushed back to Saturday, March 23rd.

The official reason for the delay is that Remy Bonjasky is participating in Glory’s grueling 16-man tournament on December 31st and should be given the proper recovery time and time for a training camp to prepare for such a big fight as Tyrone Spong.

“Remy was more than happy to take part in the tournament and then fight again in February,” explains GLORY Chairman Pierre Andurand. “But this is the first time that he and Spong will have fought and there was such huge interest in the match when we announced it that we decided to move the date and give him some time to rest up. It means that he and Spong will be in peak condition when they face each other.”

Jerome Le Banner Decisions Stefan Leko in Geneva

Jerome Le Banner Decisions Stefan Leko in Geneva

Today in Geneva, Switzerland two legends of kickboxing fought it out for the ISKA Kickboxing World Super Heavyweight Title. The two had fought before in 2001 with JLB taking a unanimous decision over 5 rounds.

Today was no different, as Le Banner won a decision over 5 rounds to become the new ISKA Kickboxing World Super Heavyweight Champion. One notable difference in this fight was that the rounds were only 2 minutes. It’s still a good win for Le Banner, who could seemingly retire at any moment. Leko is past his prime but 2 wins over him is very good for his already wide resume.

Also on the card, Frank Munoz took on Nicolas Wamba and lost a 5 round decision.

Saint-Tropez Fight Night II set for Aug 4th

Saint-Tropez Fight Night have announced their sophomore event will take place on August 4th 2014 from the unique and beautiful venue of La Citadelle in Saint-Tropez, France. The card will be headlined by a heavyweight double-header featuring French kickboxing legend Jerome Le Banner and his fellow countryman Freddy Kemayo, as they square of against Daniel Sam and Peter Aerts respectively.

Many fans will remember the infamous debut of Saint-Tropez Fight Night last year, whereby Jerome Le Banner defended his WKN World Title and was subsequently presented the belt by Hollywood star Sylvester Stallone. Le Banner looks to pick up his second victory of 2014, as he stopped Luican Danilencu with body-shots back in May. Englishman Daniel Sam will look to get back in the winners circle after getting KO’d by Moroccan prospect Ismael Lazaar last weekend in London. To make it even worse for Sam, he’d lost his last three bouts previously as well, with all three losses coming in in dominant fashion.

Saint-Tropez Fight Night II set for Aug 4th

Fresh of the announcement that he will meet long-time rival Ernesto Hoost in Japan later this year, ‘The Dutch Lumberjack’ Peter Aerts will also square off against Frenchman Freddy Kemayo. Kemayo enters the bout on a six-fight win streak, having not loss since November 2012.

Saint-Tropez Fight has also announced that all bouts will be contested under Muay Thai rules and at 95kgs. There are more bouts expected to be announced at a later date.

Hinata vs. Ristie Rematch, Imada vs. Abdollahi Complete S-Cup Fight Card

The Shootboxing S-Cup takes place every two years, with the next edition coming on this Saturday, November 17 in Tokyo, Japan. We’ve learned of all the tournament match-ups, super fights and some reserve fights already. Now there have been two final additions to the fight card to complete the full lineup.

Hinata will rematch Andy Ristie in a reserve fight. Their first fight was earlier this year in January where Ristie destroyed Hinata in the first round with three knockdowns at It’s Showtime in Leeuwarden, Netherlands. That was Hinata’s first time fighting outside of Asia so maybe this time having a hometown advantage will help him. Ristie has been one of the breakout fighters of this year and is undefeated on the year.

In a super fight, MMA fighter Toby Imada, who made it to the finals of the 2010 S-Cup will fight Mostafa Abdollahi at 70kg. It’s interesting that Imada wasn’t included in the actual tournament field, being that he fought for Shootboxing a number of times, including the 2010 S-Cup. Full fight card below:
