Tyrone Spong Knocks Michael Duut Out in Dramatic Fashion

Tyrone Spong Knocks Michael Duut Out in Dramatic Fashion

In one of the most exciting moments of Glory 9 so far, tournament favorite Tyrone Spong squared off against Michael Duut. Many were expecting Spong to make quick work of Duut, and in a way he did, but not before a surprise hit in the early part of the fight took Spong by surprise and floored him. In what was one of the most dramatic moments that we’ve seen all night, Spong got back up to his feet, kept Duut at a distance and unloaded with a brutal right hook that knocked Duut right out.

In a way it reminded me a lot of the second time that Badr Hari met Ruslan Karaev, where Karaev scored a surprise knockdown on Badr that only upset him so much that when he got up he basically murdered him.

New Fights Announced for Lion Fight 10

So, I’m well aware that Lion Fight 10 went down last night, but where was the live coverage? Albuquerque has been in the middle of monsoon season, which means crazy storms, tons of lightning, flash flooding and everything else in the book outside of biblical plagues. For some reason my satellite never went down last night, but my internet was spotty at best, so here are the Lion Fight 10 results kind of late, but better than never.

The main event saw Yodsanklai batter and bruise Chike Lindsay, who had a good first round but then felt the full power of Yodsanklai and was unable to do much. The co-main event saw Matt Embree and Kevin Ross square off in a decision that is hotly-contested, but if you watch the fight closely, Embree was indeed the winner. Ross was applying a lot of pressure throughout the fight, but Embree was landing the cleaner strikes and counters. Ross rallied near the end, but it wasn’t enough in the judges eyes to give him the W.

Tiffany Van Soest lived up to her hype in capturing the Lion Fight Women’s Featherweight Championship against a tough Lucy Payne via a first round stoppage. A few well placed punches followed up by some brutal elbows was all that the ref needed to see before he stepped in to call the fight. Sean Kearney came in on late notice against a man he knows very well in Malaipet Sasiprapa and once again Malaipet was able to get the better of him, just working him over the whole fight with his kicks and clinchwork.

Ognjen Topic and Coke Chunhawat put on what was arguably the most entertaining fight of the night, as Ognjen was strong earlier on in the fight, but Coke was able to surge later in the fight thanks to the local fans cheering him on. It was a classic battle of Ognjen being stronger from the outside and Coke feeling more comfortable in close with the clinch. The opening fight saw two less experienced fighters in Jason Andrada and JP Cole square off in what was a good scrap and saw Andrada take the W.

  • Yodsanklai Fairtex (R5 – UD) Chike Lindsay
  • Matt Embree (R5 – UD) Kevin Ross
  • Tiffany Van Soest (R1 – TKO) Lucy Payne
  • Malaipet Sasiprapa (R5 – Dec.) Sean Kearney
  • Ognjen Topic (R5 – SD) Coke Chunhawat
  • Jason Andrada (R5 – UD) JP Cole

Tyrone Spong Wins GLORY 9 Light Heavyweight Tournament

Tyrone Spong Wins GLORY 9 Light Heavyweight Tournament

In what was a matchup between the best fighters at Light Heavyweight under the GLORY banner we saw Tyrone Spong square off against Danyo Ilunga in the Light Heavyweight Slam Finals. Both men were worn down from fighting twice earlier in the night, with Ilunga fighting two harder bouts for sure. Both men were primed and ready for action when Spong landed a barrage of strikes that Ilunga was covering up.

In what was a rather confusing turn of events, Ilunga, who was still standing, still covering up and aware of what was happening, was pushed aside by the ref who called the bout in what was one of the worst stoppages that we’ve seen in a very, very long time. It makes some of the Joop Ubeda stoppages of the last few years look competent. We’ll hopefully have footage of the stoppage in a bit up on the site, but if you somehow missed it, trust us, Spong was looking good, but Ilunga was not down and out by any stretch of the imagination.

Congratulations go out to Tyrone Spong, though, as he won the GLORY Light Heavyweight Slam in New York, which is a feather in his cap no matter what.

Rumor Gokhan Saki And Others Possibly Also Leaving Golden Glory

Rumor Gokhan Saki And Others Possibly Also Leaving Golden Glory

UPDATE 9/22: Saki tweets: “I haven’t left golden glory at all. I’m still fighting for GG guys!!!” Sources still claiming that Saki and two others have left/are leaving, take that for what it is.

UPDATE 21:04 Eastern Time: Bas Boon spoke with LiverKick.com, when prompted on Saki leaving, “Not that I am aware of…” Other sources still insist that Saki has left.

UPDATE 19:51 Eastern Time: Received independent confirmation from a source close to both Saki and Golden Glory that Saki is indeed out of Golden Glory. Glory has not finalized talks with K-1 yet and is apparently not working well with It’s Showtime, so look carefully and put two and two together for other possible departures.

Rumor Gokhan Saki And Others Possibly Also Leaving Golden Glory

When it rains it pours. Earlier today it was announced that Alistair Overeem was leaving his home management and team of Golden Glory. Overeem has been a part of the Golden Glory umbrella for about twelve years now, since the formation of the team. Overeem has been described by Bas Boon as like “family” to him and the team, and Golden Glory trainer Martijn de Jong has been known to be very good friends with Alistair.

There has been a rumor that some of us have been sitting on for a while as it wasn’t clear if it was ever going to come to fruition, but apparently it has. The latest rumor is that Gokhan Saki has also left team Golden Glory, but this has not been confirmed. LiverKick.com has reached out to Bas Boon for comment on this but have not heard back from him of yet. Generally speaking, we do not like to post rumors like this, but it has been a longstanding rumor, persisting for the better part of this year and with it coming out into the public’s eye, now is as good of a time as any to talk about it.

Gokhan Saki had apparently been unhappy with Team Golden Glory for quite a while now, going as far back as last year’s K-1 World Grand Prix. We had heard from multiple sources that Saki was aggressively looking for a way out of his contract with Golden Glory and looking to relocate and enter the world of MMA. While he could easily make a transition to MMA within the Golden Glory camp, he has been looking for new representation and for a new home to train, apparently sick of working with Golden Glory. This afternoon Percy Crawford of FightHype.com confirmed that he was indeed bringing Gokhan Saki stateside and helping him find a trainer. According to everyone’s favorite MMA personality Bloodstain Lane, a “BIG TIME” boxing trainer.

The rumor doesn’t stop with Gokhan Saki, though. There has been rumblings that Bas Boon’s sick leave over the summer caused some massive internal problems at Golden Glory. Problems with Strikeforce and other big business deals that fell through had caused some friction between fighters, trainers and management with talks of some big names within the camp possibly leaving to pursue other options.

We’ll give you more information when we have it.

Global FC 3 Immediately Updates Tournament: Badr Hari, Graham, Oborotov and Leko

Now that is some quick turnaround. Last night at about 1:30am I received a press release announcing Global FC 3, then just hours later they announced their full line-up for their tournament. It turns out that Peter Aerts is not participating in the tournament, instead he will be featured on the card, as will American Dewey Cooper. So the question arises of who is in this tournament?

Global FC 3 Immediately Updates Tournament: Badr Hari, Graham, Oborotov and Leko

Right now the names are Badr Hari, Peter Graham, Arnold Oborotov and Stefan Leko. Definitely an eclectic mix here, with Peter Graham fighting MMA of late in Bellator, Oborotov has been relatively quiet after getting his hype train derailed by Jarrell Miller and Andrei Stoica and Stefan Leko is, well, Stefan Leko. Leko’s career has had a few interesting twists and turns, but it is safe to say that Stefan Leko’s time at the top has come and gone.

Badr Hari to be Released From Prison Tomorrow, Still Awaiting Trial

The Badr Hari saga continues, and as of tomorrow he will be released from prison again tomorrow, where he will then await trial.

Today a court in Amsterdam determined that Badr Hari should be released from prison to await his upcoming trial for the charges that he faces. Once again, there are also conditions of his release. Badr can’t catering establishments between the hours of 8:00 PM at night to 8:00 AM in the morning.

Before Badr was taken into custody again last time, he also faced conditions that disallowed him to be in catering establishments, which he violated. He will again not be allowed to be in contact with witnesses with the exception of his girlfriend Estelle Cruyff. He also violated that condition prior to his current stint in prison as well.

The main witnesses in the case have been heard, although there are still some more witnesses left. The court deemed that it was unnecessary to hold Badr Hari any longer due to this.

Hesdy Gerges Arrested For Drug Trafficking

Hesdy Gerges Arrested For Drug Trafficking

The kickboxing world suffered another huge blow today, as It’s Showtime and K-1 fighter Hesdy Gerges was arrested for drug trafficking earlier today. The arrest of Gerges was in relation to a raid by Belgium officials in May, where Hesdy’s half brother, Ashraf and his friend were caught with 128 kilos of cocaine in Antwerp, Belgium. Gerges, as well as four more suspects were arrested today at the behest of Belgium officials, who will demand extradition.

Hesdy was asked about this last year and vehemently denied having anything to do with his brother’s drug smuggling operation. It is unclear what Hesdy’s involvement is at this point, but according to at5.nl, during the raid computers, phones as well as weapons and ammunition were confiscated, but it was not clear what, if anything was taken from Gerges. This comes hot on the heel of Ashwin Balrak’s arrest for drug possession in November, found with 82 kg of cocaine on him, as well as Badr Hari’s sprawling legal problems involving assault on a bouncer last year.

Hesdy Gerges Arrested For Drug Trafficking

To compound matters, Mayor Van der Laan of Amsterdam has been very vocal about kickboxing and martial arts events, and was looking to crack down on organized crime in Amsterdam. He believes that kickboxing events bring organized crime to the city and parade criminals around as VIPs. He is unhappy with the image the city has and is looking to clean it up. There was talk of outright banning events, but Van der Laan has recently went on record stating that is not his intention.

With It’s Showtime’s next event on March 6th, it appears that Hesdy Gerges will not be able to fight in the main event against Daniel Ghita, as a case like this will take a while to be sorted out, especially because it involves an extradition process. [source]
