The fight that we all predicted as the finals of the GLORY 9 New York Light Heavyweight tournament might have been Danyo Ilunga vs. Tyrone Spong, but the other fighters on the card were not ready to just let that happen. Danyo Ilunga went up against Dustin Jacoby, whom many saw as a pushover in the tournament, only for him to really turn up the pressure and give Ilunga a run for his money. While Ilunga's cardio might not have held up, Jacoby's did and he did his best to pull out the upset against Ilunga. Ilunga did walk away the better man, moving into the finals.
That left Tyrone Spong against Filip Verlinden. Verlinden might have had some doubts about his last fight hanging over his head, as you could argue that Steve McKinnon won the bout, but he really turned up the intensity against Spong, knowing what was on the line here. Spong against a guy closer to his size showed some hesitation and restraint, which gave Verlinden a chance to get off some better shots and hold his own. Spong was still the stronger fighter, with the damage all over Verlinden's arms and body showing up by the end of the second round. Spong won the decision to put him into the Finals.
That leaves Tyrone Spong vs. Danyo Ilunga as your Finals in what will determine the best Light Heavyweight Kickboxer in the world.
