Alistair Overeem Sues Former Management Team

AlistairYou know there is something going on in the combat sports world when online gossip site TMZ is sending out a fight-related news release. As opposed to the usual inside scoop on a backstage brawl or something involving a lady of the night that might be a man of the night, instead it is about the 2010 K-1 World Grand Prix Champion and newly signed UFC fighter Alistair Overeem. As we learned from the latest episode of The Reem, Alistair isn't happy with Bas Boon. It appears that, like everything else with the Reem, he strategically released it just as his team was ready to file a lawsuit against Bas Boon.

According to the lawsuit, filed in L.A. County Superior Court, Overeem stupidly agreed to give his managers 35% of his pre-tax income in exchange for their services -- but the managers failed him miserably.

Overeem claims the managers have refused to pay him more than $151,000 in earnings -- including a bigtime bonus he was supposed to rake in when he signed with the UFC.

Overeem is suing for unspecified damages -- and he wants a court order to break his contract with the management team ASAP.

As much as I feel for Alistair and wish him the best, if you sign a contract, even a bad one, you should have read the fine print. From what we know Golden Glory contracts include free training as long as you are a part of the team, which for a lot of fighters the fees related to training can add up very quickly. It is also not unheard for in Europe to see management take 25 - 30% of fighter's income.
