Weekend Results: SuperKombat WGP Giurgiu

  • Published in Europe

SK

Man, this has really been a crazy weekend that I'm still recovering from. This is a good thing for Kickboxing fans, though, as things have really been hitting on all cylinders of late. SUPERKOMBAT is of course in the midst of their World Grand Prix series, which continued this weekend in Romania. Bogdan Stoica earned a victory over Amir Zeyada, who has not fought in over two years and it showed. James Wilson and Damian Garcia fought in a battle of wills that went into an extension round before Garcia picked up the victory and Sebastian Ciobanu found himself knocked out in the third round against Reduoan Cairo in what looked to be a fun fight.

To top things off Jegish Yegoian secured his spot in the Super Kombat WGP tournament with a win here. Full results follow.

SUPERKOMBAT Teams with Festival dell'Oriente

  • Published in Kickboxing

SK

So SUPERKOMBAT's Eduard Irimia has decided to pay some homage to the world of traditional martial arts with this year's Festival dell'Oriente in Italy. Think of this festival as, well, a huge martial arts festival that will have over 5,000 martial artists from 113 countries competing for a world championship. How SUPERKOMBAT fits in is that on the third day of the festival they will host SUPERKOMBAT New Heroes: Asia vs. the Rest of the World.

The entire Festival dell'Oriente event is based around amateur competition and SUPERKOMBAT is looking to establish itself not only as a professional sports league, but one that is in tune with culture, martial arts and history. SUPERKOMBAT's New Heroes event will also be the only professional sporting event held at the Festival dell'Oriente and will be broadcast to all of SUPERKOMBAT's media partners around the world.

It's an interesting concept and it's cool to see SUPERKOMBAT being involved with something that is connected with the roots of the sport like that.

Benjamin Adegbuyi vs. Jamal Ben Saddik Set for GLORY 14

  • Published in Glory

GLORY 14

GLORY held a press conference in Zagreb today with promoter Orsat Zovko, Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic and Remy Bonjasky to hype up the upcoming GLORY 14 Zagreb event. This was some standard fare stuff, but the big takeaway from the press conference was that they've announced a Heavyweight showdown that has some serious implications for a lot of fans out there. GLORY has announced that Benjamin Adegbuyi will make his debut for the promotion against Jamal Ben Saddik.

If that doesn't sound odd to you, let me break it down for you. Benjamin Adegbuyi is under contract to SuperKombat and is currently one of their best prospects. SuperKombat has been looking to get Adegbuyi some fights outside of their organization and made a plea to both K-1 and GLORY last year and it looks like they've come to a deal with GLORY. This is great for Adegbuyi who will be able to go up against top competition in GLORY, this in turn helps SuperKombat as one of their fighters is getting a big bump like this.

Andrei Stoica vs. Horace Martin Set for SuperKombat's June 21st Show

  • Published in Kickboxing

June 21st will be a big day for the sport of Kickboxing with a few huge events and SuperKombat is looking to make their stick out more with Andrei Stoica defending his Super Cruiserweight Title against Horace Martin. This will be Andrei Stoica's first defense of the SuperKombat Super Cruiserweight Championship since he won the title back in December against Ondrej Hutnik.

Stoica's last fight was in the GLORY ring in March where he lost via first round knockout to Danyo Ilunga, although there is no shame in losing to a fighter the caliber of Danyo Ilunga. If anything it should inspire him to push harder and to want to prove that he does belong in the ring with the likes of Ilunga.

Expect more announcements on the SuperKombat June 21st show shortly.

Catalin Morosanu vs. Giannis Stoforidis Headlining Aug. 2nd SuperKombat Event

  • Published in Kickboxing

On August 2nd SuperKombat will promote their fourth SuperKombat World Grand Prix event. The event is set to be headlined by Catalin Morosanu squaring off against SuperKombat's home-grown star in Giannis Stoforidis. Morosanu has been focused on his political career of late, but still loves to step into the ring to show his fans what he's all about. Morosanu is probably one of the biggest, mainstream stars that kickboxing has in Romania, with him regularly appearing on Romanian television.

Giannis doesn't seem phased by the challenge, though; “I’m hungry for the revange in Superkombat® after in my last fight where I wasn’t able to qualify for the final because of my hand injury. This time I have a big chance to establish myself as a star if I win against a living legend in kickboxing. Morosanu, be afraid! Hercules is coming for war.”, announced Giannis Stoforidis, one of the Superkombat New Heroes.

Watch Pavel Zhuravlev vs. Sebastien Van Thielan from SuperKombat WGP III

  • Published in Video

Romania's SuperKombat has decidedly stood out over the year, coming from the Local Kombat shows of years past and building their own World Grand Prix tournament that stretches over multiple qualifying tournaments. While the level of talent within the qualifying tournaments is not great, the winners coming out are without a doubt top notch, including Sergeii Laschenko, Ismael Londt and now Pavel Zhuravlev. Zhuravlev is a guy that you might not know a lot about, outside of his lone K-1 fight which was against Gokhan Saki where he actually defeated Gokhan Saki in a Superfight by Unanimous Decision. Since then he has yet to appear in K-1 again, but the truth is, when he does he will be a force to be dealt with. His specialty over the past few years has been winning tournaments, it seems, not on the big world stage like K-1, but still really solid wins in tournaments, and it was no surprise when he took the SuperKombat WGP III by storm. Don't weigh against him for the loss to Igor Jurkovic at Utlimate Glory in May, that is one of only 6 career losses.

Video is from our good friends at Gladiatorium.ro.
