SuperKombat Looking to License Brand for Shows in 2014

  • Published in Kickboxing

sk

SuperKombat's 2013 came to a close after their last SuperKombat WGP event that saw new champions crowned in many divisions, including a SuperKombat WGP Champion for the third year running. As SuperKombat looks ahead into 2014 they have decided to begin licensing out the brand to interested promoters to help to bring SuperKombat to more cities than they alone could do. It's an interesting idea that we've seen other promotions do, namely K-1 over the past year with their K-1 World Tour events, which can make everyone happy.

SuperKombat gets money from licensing out the brand, as well as finds new talent from these promoters, while the promoters get to promote a larger brand with their own local stars. Fighters also get experience on a show with a solid name brand and can leverage that for more opportunities in the future. It's a win-win for everyone.

“Those kind of events are not organized by SUPERKOMBAT® Fighting Championship but the promoters can get the license to host the elimination bouts. The winners of these qualification fights will have their places in SUPERKOMBAT® Fighting Championship’s events, including the New Heroes and the World Grand Prix series. On the other hand, all the events and qualification fights included in other events will be announced exclusively on SUPERKOMBAT® Fighting Championship’s website at www.superkombat.com," added Eduard Irimia.

Andrei Stoica vs. Horace Martin Set for SuperKombat's June 21st Show

  • Published in Kickboxing

June 21st will be a big day for the sport of Kickboxing with a few huge events and SuperKombat is looking to make their stick out more with Andrei Stoica defending his Super Cruiserweight Title against Horace Martin. This will be Andrei Stoica's first defense of the SuperKombat Super Cruiserweight Championship since he won the title back in December against Ondrej Hutnik.

Stoica's last fight was in the GLORY ring in March where he lost via first round knockout to Danyo Ilunga, although there is no shame in losing to a fighter the caliber of Danyo Ilunga. If anything it should inspire him to push harder and to want to prove that he does belong in the ring with the likes of Ilunga.

Expect more announcements on the SuperKombat June 21st show shortly.

Catalin Morosanu vs. Giannis Stoforidis Headlining Aug. 2nd SuperKombat Event

  • Published in Kickboxing

On August 2nd SuperKombat will promote their fourth SuperKombat World Grand Prix event. The event is set to be headlined by Catalin Morosanu squaring off against SuperKombat's home-grown star in Giannis Stoforidis. Morosanu has been focused on his political career of late, but still loves to step into the ring to show his fans what he's all about. Morosanu is probably one of the biggest, mainstream stars that kickboxing has in Romania, with him regularly appearing on Romanian television.

Giannis doesn't seem phased by the challenge, though; “I’m hungry for the revange in Superkombat® after in my last fight where I wasn’t able to qualify for the final because of my hand injury. This time I have a big chance to establish myself as a star if I win against a living legend in kickboxing. Morosanu, be afraid! Hercules is coming for war.”, announced Giannis Stoforidis, one of the Superkombat New Heroes.

Micky Terrill Faces tough test at SuperKombat WGP.

  • Published in Kickboxing

Micky Terrill Faces Tough Test to Follow in Countryman’s Footsteps, Win SUPERKOMBAT World Grand Prix Tournament.

On May 24th, 2014, Micky Terrill, winner of the Superkombat UK tryouts, took on respected, emerging Romanian fighter, Danut Hurduc, at the Superkombat World Grand Prix II and won a unanimous decision. The same night, his fellow Brit, Jamie Bates, also a Superkombat UK tryout winner, prevailed in the Superkombat Grand Prix II Light-Heavyweight tournament. While Terrill is 30 years old, Bates is 24, and they have together elicited the excitement of British kickboxing fans for their potential on the world stage.

To come out of this four-man Superkombat World Grand Prix III cruiserweight tournament like his countryman, however, Terrill (26-2) will have to defeat two fighters near or above his skill level. Terill is an outside fighter who works behind his jab to throw low kicks to either leg or to keep his opponent’s guard up for a hook-uppercut combination. He also uses his height to stay out of his opponent’s range and usually slips out of tight spots when they start to push him toward the ropes.

Unlike Hurduc who had trouble getting inside or putting pressure on Terrill, his first round opponent Saturday, Patrick Van Rees (27-8-3), has the height to match Terrill and to force him to engage, even when it is not opportune. One of the weaknesses Terrill showed in his otherwise exemplary performance against Hurduc was his tendency to get pushed into the ropes and leave himself open. This was without tremendous danger on this occasion, for Hurduc resorted nearly exclusive to wide, lurching punches that either sailed over Terrill’s head or landed on his arms and shoulders.

Van Rees is the winner of the Superkombat tryouts from Almere, Netherlands, and won his last two fights by knockout, and does not wait for his opponent to come to him. If Terrill leaves the same opening against Van Rees, he will receive a hard knee to the stomach. Van Rees is a harder puncher than Terrill and frequently moves into an effective clinch attack.

Terrill has the potential to become a solid fighter beyond the local scene in the UK, but he will have to build upon a fabulous performance in his Superkombat debut to make it past Van Rees and topple the winner of Moises Baute and Cristian Ristea.

The close proximity of each of these fighters’ talent and abilities as well as, in some cases, contrasting styles make for a compelling and exciting tournament. Though on the same day of Glory 17 and the Glory Last Man Standing PPV, it will undoubtedly be overlooked.
