Rumblings of K-1 World Grand Prix Final 8 in NYC Moving to Jan. to Air Live on Spike TV Emerge

  • Published in K-1

K-1

Seeing as though after this weekend, the next big K-1 Heavyweight event was set to be the K-1 World Grand Prix Final 8 originating from New York City on December 26th -- or so we thought. There are rumblings coming out of Japan tonight that the date may be pushed back to some time in January to air it live on Spike TV here in the United States, which would make a whole hell of a lot more sense than streaming it via UStream on Spike's website for $10. As WWE and the UFC can tell you, the PPV business is a fickle mistress, and things can drop off in the blink of an eye or simply never pick up. Never mind when it comes to internet stream PPVs, which is a harder sell, to say the least.

If this is true, this will be huge for K-1, to be able to air an event originating from the US live on a major cable network.

We will keep you updated on this story and more K-1 news throughout the weekend.

TaKe On Productions October 22nd Full Thai Rules in Atlantic City

  • Published in Kickboxing

TKO ProductionsThe world of Muay Thai in the United States is a bit of an odd one at times, as there is some fragmentation. For a while now there have been regions where Muay Thai is incredibly hot and there are local promoters doing great things. Los Angeles and the Bay Area have been there, as is Las Vegas and especially in the past few years, New York. New York has best been known for Friday Night Fights, the long-running Muay Thai promotion run by the Church Street Boxing gym.

We've seen a new promotion rise up recently and begin to do big, awesome things, and that is TaKe On Productions. TKO Productions has been running since 2009 and has been picking up steam ever since. TaKe On has a big Muay Thai show coming up on October 22nd at Bally's Grand Ballroom in Atlantic City. TKO Productions has had eleven big sell out shows in a row before striking out to Atlantic City, working now with MSG Sports (Madison Square Garden). This event will also be streamed live on GFL.tv, and unlike a lot of other promotions who have gone that route, the card will be $9.95, as opposed to upwards of $25, which is a smart price point for an event like this. I'm looking forward to TaKe On Productions doing bigger and better things in the future.

Full press release with details on the event after the break.

Don't forget to check out their website for details on the card and more news.

  • Niko Tsigaras (R1 - KO) Dominick Biondo
  • John Bowman (R3 - KO) Villi Bello
  • Alexy Filyakov (R1 - KO) Mohamed Fanzy
  • Thiago Michel R3 - UD) Paul Marfort

  • Francois ambang (R3 - TKO) Eddie Walker
  • Jhonata Diniz (R1 - TKO) Igor Jurkovic
  • Brian Collette (R1 - KO) Warren Thompson
  • Artem Vakhitov (R3 - UD) Nenad Pagonis
  • Spike TV
  • Lightweight Semi-Finals: Robin van Roosmalen (R3 - UD) Davit Kiria -- This fight went exactly like you'd expect it to, as it was almost a carbon copy of their first bout. Kiria just never turned the heat up like he needed to do to best RvR's volume. Robin takes the decision.
  • Lightweight Semi-Finals: Andy Ristie (R3 - KO) Giorgio Petrosyan -- Wow. This fight was all Petrosyan going into the third round, but Ristie was applying pressure and was landing a few really hard shots. A big shot late in the third round connected on Petrosyan only for another to happen and Petrosyan goes down with the referee calling it off. Wow.
  • Lightweight Tournament Reserve Bout: Ky Hollenbeck (R3 - UD) Warren Stevelmans -- Not a lot to say about this fight, as there was a lot of clinching with Hollenbeck dominating most of the fight. Hollenbeck had a very strong round two and then did some great work in R3 to solidify the win.
  • Ben Edwards (R3 - KO) Jamal Ben Saddik -- My god. This was pretty much every bit of the Heavyweight slugfest that you expected it to be, ending with Ben Edwards landing some crazy shots in R3 and putting Jamal Ben Saddik to sleep.
  • Wayne Barrett (R3 - UD) Joe Schilling -- My god this fight was just crazy. Barrett put in some serious work in the first round, frustrating Schilling without scoring much. The second round saw Barrett drop Schilling not once but twice, with Joe warrioring to his feet both times to solider on. The third round is where it went nuts as Schilling landed a tremendous knee to the face that flattened Barrett. It looked like Barrett was out but he was able to get up at the last moment and continue fighting. Hats off to both men for a crazy fight.
  • Lightweight Tournament Finals: Andy Ristie (R2 - KO) Robin van Roosmalen -- Man, tonight was just Andy Ristie's night. There was no one that was going to get in Andy Ristie's way as he dropped RvR in R1 and then did the same int he second round with Robin not getting back up.

GLORY 12 Impression from Press Row

  • Published in News

Ristie (C) Bauzen for WKA

It seems as though 2013 has been the Year of the Underdog for Glory. With the exception of Tyrone Spong, none of the current champions entered their respective tournaments as the favorite, but rather as the third or fourth seed. Perhaps it is fitting, considering that kickboxing as a sport is also still a bit of an underdog in the United States when compared to boxing and MMA. However, one of the best things about sports, and combat sports in particular, is a spectacular upset, and last night’s Glory 12 show was an inspiration and triumph for underdogs everywhere. Anyone watching could not deny the caliber of fighters or complain about the finish rate - no less than eleven of the sixteen bouts ended by (T)KO, and no grumbling or controversies surrounded the existing decisions. It was a fantastic night and one that will hopefully continue to strengthen awareness of the American kickboxing community.

Saturday night’s Lightweight tournament winner Andy Ristie showed the world that he didn’t give a damn about no rankings by knocking out number one ranked Giorgio Petrosyan, and then Robin van Roosmalen. Both men seemed to have some difficulty dealing with Ristie’s aggressive and unorthodox style. The “Machine” applied relentless pressure, and didn’t allow the top two favorites to rest or figure it out.

Wayne Barrett (C) Bauzen for WKA

In the main event, despite having far less experience, New York’s own Wayne Barrett won a Unanimous Decision after an intense battle with the favorite and recent Glory Middleweight tournament winner, Joe Schilling. Barrett let everyone know that Petrosyan wasn’t the only doctor in the house. If you can’t stop crazy, then call Barrett the psychiatrist, who visibly rocked Schilling with punches and knocked him down for two eight counts in Round 2. Schilling came back hard in Round 3 and returned the favor by feeding Barrett a vicious knee that put him down briefly, but Barrett managed to stand back up and they fought to the bell. Both fighters showed incredible heart.

  • Other notable moments included:
  • Brian “the Lion” Colette added another first round knockout win at Madison Square Garden to his record, somehow managing to land a right head kick from the scrum that laid out his opponent, Warren Thompson.
  • Saulo Cavalari knocks out veteran Mourad Bouzidi with a nasty right hook just one minute and 23 seconds in the first round, extending his 16 KO record to 17.
  • Francois Ambang uses great hand combinations to set up a nasty low kick that cut off the leg of his opponent, Eddie Walker, giving him the win by TKO in round 3.
  • Robin van Roosmalen versus Davit Kiria in the semi-final was a treat to watch. Two extremely tough, technical strikers not willing to give up an inch to the other stood in the center of the ring and banged it out. Kiria faded in rounds 2 and 3, but still a very exciting ‘dialogue’ between the two.
